VP, advocacy

Laura Mitchell

Laura Mitchell, M.B.A., is an accountant by trade and an advocate at heart. Over the course of nearly 40 years, Laura has served the PTA at every level, from the school to the national, in leadership and areas of budget and finance, as well as mental health and substance use prevention. She currently chairs the Operating Budget and Substance Use Prevention committees and serves as Vice President of Advocacy with the Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA). Laura just completed terms of service as the co-chair of the Free State PTA Nominating Committee, and on the National PTA Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach Committee, and continues to serve on several other boards and commissions in various capacities to advocate for all students in Montgomery County and throughout the State of Maryland. Her advocacy is particularly focused on equitable access to mental health and substance use prevention and treatment. Laura’s advocacy efforts earned her both the 2022 MCCPTA Advocate of the year and National PTA’s Shirley Igo Advocate of the Year awards and the 2023 Superintendent’s Community Champion for Children award. Laura’s “why” is her 11th grade grandchild.
