November 1 is the start of Native American Heritage Month, which is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous people in North America. It is also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month and aims to acknowledge their important contributions and raise awareness about the challenges they face.  

  • What it is: An annual observance dedicated to the heritage of Native Americans. 

  • Purpose: To celebrate diverse cultures, recognize contributions, and raise awareness of current issues. 

  • History: President George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution in 1990 to designate the entire month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month.
