What is Your Story?

The Reflections Arts Program

Camilo, a junior at Richard Montgomery High School, entered his musical composition into the Reflections Program. Camilo won at his school, then at the (MCCPTA) County level, then the Maryland State level, where he became the Maryland entry in the high school division of music composition in the national round. The Reflections Program consists of six categories of art (dance, film, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts) and a special artist category. The final outcome of this national competition results in seven individual winners, one for each category, who have surpassed every other entry nationwide. Camilo is one of those seven winners. It is an amazing accomplishment!

Camilo's Artist Statement:  Study in Magenta tells the story of a dream, where we escape our everyday lives and experience an eccentric, sensational world. The piece takes an ABA form, such that we begin the piece in the present world (A); we slip into a fantastical dream (B); and then we awaken (A) only to realize that it was all in our imagination. This piece is particularly relevant to my busy life, and surely the busy lives of others, because it is often only by "letting my imagination fly" that I find an escape from everyday stress and obligations.

Camilo will receive a trip to the National PTA Convention in Orlando, Florida where his piece will be performed, $800, a trophy, certificate and medal. Camilo was recently surprised with the news while in orchestra class at school. Camilo’s peers, family, school administrators and county and state PTA representatives were there to share the special moment.

Congratulations to you, Camilo!

National PTA Award of Excellence: Visual Arts (Middle School)

Celebrate arts in education with the Reflections Program.  Annually, students across the country are invited to share their creativity and individuality through this National PTA program.  Students are provided a theme, and they are free to interpret the theme through one of six categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts.

Students create amazing art, film, music, photography and literature that is beautiful and inspirational to fellow students, parents and judges. What is most important is that our student entrants love to express themselves artistically, and we are the beneficiaries of their passion! Students in MCPS submit their entries through their local PTA to MCCPTA.

Contact the MCCPTA Reflections Chair or see the National PTA website for more information or to start a Reflections program at your school.
